Vintage Bohemian Amber Glass Chandelier, Kamenický Šenov, 6-Light, 1970s

A beautiful and distinctive vintage chandelier made in Kamenický Šenov, former Czechoslovakia, one of the most important historic centres of European glass and chandelier production.

The chandelier features an elegant six-arm metal frame with a warm brass finish, complemented by wonderful handcrafted amber-orange glass bobeches with a textured, gently ruffled form. The combination of glowing amber glass and aged metal gives the piece a particularly warm and sophisticated character.

Its sculptural curved arms, spherical details and elongated central body are characteristic of decorative Central European lighting of the mid-20th century. It works beautifully in both a traditional interior and as a statement piece in a more contemporary setting.

The metal shows visible age-related patina, particularly on the arms, which I have intentionally preserved as part of the chandelier's authentic vintage character. Apart from this natural ageing, the chandelier is in very good vintage condition.

A little history

Kamenický Šenov in Northern Bohemia has been internationally known for glassmaking and chandelier production for centuries. The local chandelier-making tradition can be traced to the early 18th century, with Josef Palme establishing a lighting workshop in nearby Prácheň in 1724. Kamenický Šenov later became one of the most significant European centres of decorative lighting and in 1856 established what the town describes as the world's first professional glass school.

During the 20th century, the region's many historic lighting workshops and manufacturers developed into an important Czechoslovak export industry, continuing the area's centuries-old tradition of combining metalwork and decorative Bohemian glass.

Condition

Very good vintage condition.

The brass-toned / brass-finished metal has some natural patina and variation from age, especially along the arms. I consider this attractive and appropriate to the age of the piece rather than a defect.

The beautiful amber-orange glass elements are in very good condition.

The electrical system has been checked by a professional electrician and the chandelier is ready for installation in its current configuration.
